What to Expect During Professional Siding Installation

A step-by-step walkthrough of the entire siding installation process — from initial consultation to final inspection. Know exactly what happens at each stage.

If you've never had siding installed on your home, the process can seem mysterious. What actually happens? How long does it take? Do you need to move out? This guide walks you through the complete professional siding installation process so you know exactly what to expect at every stage.

Phase 1: Consultation & Planning (Week 1)

The process begins with a thorough consultation. At Wolf's Siding, this includes:

  • On-site visit — We come to your home, assess the current exterior condition, take precise measurements, and discuss your goals
  • Material selection — We show you physical samples and help you choose the right material, style, profile, and color for your home
  • Detailed proposal — You receive an itemized estimate covering every aspect of the project — removal, prep work, materials, installation, trim, and cleanup
  • Timeline — We provide a realistic project timeline based on your home's size and complexity

This phase typically takes about a week from initial call to signed agreement.

Phase 2: Material Ordering (1-2 Weeks)

Once you approve the proposal, we order all materials. Premium products like James Hardie ColorPlus and certain vinyl profiles may take 1-2 weeks for delivery. During this time, we schedule your installation date and coordinate any necessary permits.

We order approximately 10% extra material to account for cuts, waste, and any future repair needs. This ensures color-matched material is available without delay.

Phase 3: Preparation (Day 1)

What happens: Our crew arrives early and sets up the work area. - Protective drop cloths are laid around the foundation - Scaffolding or ladders are positioned as needed - A designated waste area is set up for debris - Existing siding removal begins

Your role: Move any patio furniture, planters, or decorations away from the house. Ensure access to electrical outlets for power tools. Park vehicles away from the work area.

Phase 4: Tear-Off & Inspection (Days 1-2)

What happens: Old siding is carefully removed, sorted, and loaded for disposal. - We inspect the exposed sheathing for moisture damage, rot, mold, or pest damage - Any damaged sheathing is cut out and replaced with new plywood or OSB - This is the most critical phase — what's behind your old siding tells us the true story of your home's condition

Why this matters: About 30% of the siding projects we do in Massachusetts reveal some level of hidden damage. Finding and fixing these issues during installation prevents far costlier problems later.

Phase 5: Weather Barrier & Siding Installation (Days 2-5)

What happens:
- Premium house wrap (Tyvek or equivalent) is applied over the entire exterior
- All seams are taped and penetrations (windows, doors, vents) are properly flashed
- Starter strips are installed at the base
- Siding panels are installed from bottom to top, with proper overlap, fastening, and expansion allowances
- Trim pieces, J-channels, corner posts, and soffit panels are installed
- All transitions are sealed and finished

Timeline: Most average-sized Massachusetts homes (1,500-2,500 sq ft) take 3-5 working days for installation. Larger homes or complex architectural features may take longer.

Can you stay home? Absolutely. The work is entirely on the exterior. You'll hear power tools during work hours (typically 7 AM to 5 PM), but your interior is unaffected.

Phase 6: Final Inspection & Cleanup (Final Day)

What happens:
- Our project manager does a thorough walk-around inspection
- Every panel, joint, and trim piece is checked for proper installation
- All debris, packaging, and materials are removed from your property
- The area around your home is cleaned and restored
- We do a final walk-through with you to ensure your complete satisfaction

After completion: You receive warranty documentation, care instructions, and our contact information for any future questions or service needs.
